In the Fall of 2009, a relative unknown showed up at ADCC in Barcelona, Spain and squared off with Andre Galvao. That unknown was Chris Weidman and he proceeded to have a spectacular match with Galvao. He lost via points but he was being the aggressor as he attempted a D’Arce choke and a Peruvian necktie! It was a great bout that lead you to believe that this guy is going to have a bright future.
That performance more than two years ago and his recent UFC performances lead me to think that Weidman is not going to be worried about going to the ground with Maia. Granted, Maia will still be the more experienced and technical BJJ grappler of the two but Weidman is not going to be outclassed easily. I think Weidman is going to be aggressive, both from striking and grappling, and Maia will have to do his best to fight intelligently and exploit Weidman’s inexperience. This could be an incredibly close fight that might be the most exciting fight on the main card for grappling enthusiasts.
