UFC on FOX 3 Thoughts

  • Nate Diaz proved all his doubters wrong, as he completely had his way with Jim Miller. Diaz proved to be stronger in the clinch, was able to land many clinch strikes and avoid Miller’s takedown. Completely outstruck Miller. Diaz scored a great knockdown on Miller towards the end of the first round. Miller recovered and was able to take Diaz down, but Diaz quickly swept him and got back on his feet. Diaz has improved both his takedown defense and his ability to get back up if taken down. As the 2nd round started, it was clear that Diaz was now in control. Nate was hurting him, then Miller went for a takedown late in the 2nd frame, Nate sprawled and got a beautifully brutal tongue biting guillotine choke to finish off Miller – the first and only person to ever finish Miller. I thought Diaz was the better submission grappler (Cesar BJJ Black Belt) but I was still very surprised to see him finish off Miller. Considering that Diaz has beat two top ten fighters within the last 6 months (Cerrone being the other one), no one in the lightweight division has earned a title shot more than Diaz. He has improved so much, he has a great shot at beating Henderson or Edgar. Diaz’s striking and submissions could be a threat to both Edgar and Henderson. Another thing I loved was how much he admires Gilbert Melendez and called him the real champion at the end of the show. Also, considering that Diaz has had more UFC fights in the last 5 years (16 fights) than anyone else (no one else has had more than 13 UFC fights in the last 5 years), nobody should complain about Diaz wanting to take a break while Henderson-Edgar plays out. He’ll be sharpening his skills in the meantime and having triathlons with Nick. Also, it was really nice and cool of Diaz to point out Miller’s charity raising t-shirt at the end.
  • Hendricks vs Koscheck was close, but I was cool with Hendricks getting the win. The eye poke in the first round did play a role, I wish the referee would have stopped the fight to let Hendricks recover. Hendricks looked good, but he does tend to go too much for the big hail mary punch. A striker like Condit or Diaz would make him pay if he left himself open like that. Still, happy for Hendricks.
  • Never would I have imagined seeing Belcher attempting a banana split and twister on Palhares. Also, shocked to see Belcher survive Palhares’ ground attack. Seemed like Palhares was heartbroken that he couldn’t get the leglock and Belcher just pounded him in. Great win for Belcher, he should probably fight the winner of Weidman-Munoz next.
  • Sad to see Barry get beaten like that. Johnson’s power is just ridiculous.
  • The best prelim was Louis Gaudinot vs John Lineker. Nasty brutal exchanges, super fast pace. Both guys were throwing bombs, but Gaudinot had the wrestling advantage. Also, Gaudinot got an awesome guillotine choke to win the fight. Any other night, Gaudinot would have won submission of the night, but Diaz finishing off a fellow BJJ black belt that’s never been finished was too impressive. 125 lbs division is delivering the action.
