STFC Presents “Noche De Dinamita” Preview
When I first saw TDLR put on the docket that STFC was putting on a boxing show, I was a bit taken back. I didn’t know if it was a typo since STFC has promoted nothing but MMA. To my delight, STFC is in fact putting on a boxing show and could position themselves to monopolize the combat scene in the Valley.
The Card
Ricardo Lamas (7-0) vs Alberto Navarro (3-11-3)
The main event of the night will feature rising prospect, Ricardo Lamas, going against Alberto Navarro. Lamas turned professional in 2011 and won his first two fights before taking a three year and two month hiatus. While Lamas first two fights were held over the border, his last 5 have taken place in the 956 area code. This fight will be no different. After a year away from the ring, Lamas returns to action against his most seasoned opponent yet. Alberto Navarro is a 17 fight veteran who has only been knocked out once in his career. His remaining losses are all stem from decisions. Ironically, he only has one knockout with his remaining victories coming by way of the judges scorecards.
Brandon Lee Figueroa (5-0) vs Jahaziel Vásquez Álvarez (0-2)
The heartbreaker from Weslaco, Texas has been gaining popularity and rising through the ranks of boxing since his debut. The younger brother of boxing superstar, Omar Figueroa, Brandon has blazing his own path to stardom with a spotless record of 5-0. The Weslaco heart throb not only takes the female demo breathe away but is a bit of a knockout artist with three of those victories coming by knockout. This fight is setup to make Figueroa look good so if he can’t finish Alvarez it might be a new head on Figueroa’s mantle but it won’t be impressive. I realize that it’s the boxing blueprint to give a promising prospect some cans to cook but it also needs to be an impressive performance.
Shoki Sakai (20-5)vs Carlos Villa (11-2-1)
Roberto Amenaza Garcia (37-3) vs Santos Benavides (25-9-2)
This has fight of the night written all over it. After a year layoff “La Amenaza” will be returning to the ring against Nicaraguan southpaw Santos Benavides. Garcia has lost since 2011 and is riding a nine fight win streak since then. Garcia was scheduled to go against Shawn Porter last year after having an excellent 2014 but no-showed the event due to weight issues. Garcia was also scheduled to take on Errol Spence Jr last year but also pulled out citing weight issues. This was just another step back in the career of Garcia who has been riddled with issues his whole career. Some might say he could have been the “Pride of Welsaco” instead of Omar Figueroa but personal circumstances have kept him from earning that title. This will be a bounce back fight for Garcia to show everyone that even late in his career he is still a threat. Santos Benavides is coming off back-to-back losses but should be a formidable opponent for Garcia.
Benito Rios (2-0) vs Jorge Cortez (Debut)
MMA veteran, Jorge Cortez, will be taking his talents to the boxing world against prospect Benito Rios. Rios will be entering the battle with a two fight win streak all coming by knockouts. He will be no stranger to the Boggus Ford Center(I still can’t believe how cheap Pharr sold the naming rights to the center) as all his fights have been hosted at the dealership named center. While Cortez is new to the world of professional boxing, he is battle tested and a tough competitor. I’m really curious to how this fight plays out and will leave speculation on the outcome to fate.
Mohamed Rodriguez (5-2) vs Ramsey Luna (12-4)
Here is another fight that should be interesting. Rodriguez is fairly new to the boxing world with seven fights in total while his opponent, Luna, is a 16 fight veteran. Luna has lost his last three bouts by decision and hasn’t had his hand raised since 2014. I really don’t know what to expect from this fight but I at least expect it to be entertaining for the audience.
